I have learned a lot in this English course. Actually, I had no idea with English composition before I came to this class because I was not even able to write English properly. I am still struggling in English because when I translate from Korean to English, the way of expression is not right. This problem made me lethargic in writing. I tried various ways to overcome it and fortunately, I found a good way which is using writing service center, but It was not a good memory with first experience with tutoring service since my every sentence was not correct, not even one sentence. It made me lethargic again and I started thinking about my DCCC life. I felt like I did nothing for English for two semesters and I realized that I just spent too much time on science classes which are my major. It should be balanced each other to success my DCCC life. However, Hiraeth project was the most important point to understand about mixed writing. It is combined with many styles of writing such as narration, description and exposition. Understanding of this writing will be really useful for my other classes and research paper too! Also, this experience will be a good groundwork for my entire English writing.

My research paper strongly support that growth mindset is beneficial when used properly. Dweck has assumed a growth-mindset toward the need for education to inspire the growth-mindset to students.
There are five rhetorical analysis in rhetorical concepts. Logos is more about text and persuasion. It requires many facts, datas or evidences to persuade audience. When we use logos, we need to put them properly where they needed. Then, I tried to research as much as I could. I belived that it did sifnificantly important role in my paper. Ethos can be "author" in English. The ethos consider credit as first priority in the paper. It followed that audience can be persuaded easier if author had enough back ground knowledge and experience. I had enough experiences about education system in South Korea and America. Pathos is about audience. We have to classify the audience first because we need to use emotion in our writing to persuade our readers. Winning sympathy is the main goal in pathos. I am quite sure that a number of people belive that we can grow our intellegence as muscle by hard working. Telos means purpose. We need to have a good thesis statement since clear thesiss statement is possible to provide clear understanding for our readers. I posted my thesis statement and some of topic sentences in my blog. The last analysis is Kairos. It reffers as setting. It supports particular setting in our paper. In my research paper, logos has the most power since I researched a lot which means I have sufficient dat to persuade my readers. I spent tremendous time to find right place to put resources. Also, I tried to be simple and go direct to point. Life is full of decisions from the birth to the death. Every choice is precious as it makes one’s life be developed or worse. I believe the choices that we make in our twenties are much more important than other periods.
The twenties are almost the first moment to make a decision. For example, we decide which university we would enter and what major we are majoring in when we are 20 years old. According to curriculums of colleges, we take totally different kinds of lectures. Unlike the high school that offers basic knowledge, universities offer high quality education. This choice for a major and university affects the choice for our future jobs. Furthermore, we usually get a job in the twenties. Based on a research that the Seoul University took, those who have a first job with a good working environment and high salary are likely to have better second job. That is because people generally want to get a job with better conditions than before. In the case of two seniors of our university, one decided to join a company that has long working hours and no insurance service, and the other got a job that offers comfortable working places and has fixed working hours. Five years later when they had to get a second job, the gab of the firm quality was getting wider. To conclude, as all decision are linked with the choices in the future, the choices that we make in the twenties are invaluable. The choices will affect the quality and the scope of the options of the future. In short, we have to choose a better option when we have an opportunity to make a decision and the twenties are the major moment for this. The effective leader tries to make others feel they have been part of a decision. As problems related to leaders have revealed, a popular web page is filled with questions and answers about leaders such as what the true meaning of leaders is, and what good leaders are. Some people might think that a leader should develop groups that they are in even though the leader does not allow others to be part of decision. I agree with the statement that the good leader allows others participate in making decision. Following are the two reasons why I support the statement. First of all, the effective leader has to be a representative of audience. The leader has to listen what the audience want and what they are not satisfied with. A leader is not a special person who has untouchable power or right to control others, but a leader is just a person responsible for collecting and representing citizen’ opinions. If a leader ignores audience’ opinion, he or she is not a leader, a dictator. Furthermore, even a leader is limited in some parts. The opinion of citizen will be a good advice for the leader, and it will help make a better decision for population. For instance, one way to propose one’s opinion in Korea is Korean citizen can represent their opinion or complaints on the web page of the Korean government, that is an easy and effective way to share their opinion and affect the result of decision. With the ideas shared by public, the leader could make better decision. To conclude, a leader who is a representative of the public should admit opinion of the audience. This will be helpful for getting better decision. Also, the leader who accepts others’ opinion deserves to be admired by his or her audience. To achieve the common goal of a group, it is necessary that make others be part of a decision. This bonus blog is based on my Academic Mindset writing materials. The reason that I post this blog is because It is good way to revise thesis statement, topic sentences and source materials. Thesis Statement: “According to Dweck Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Grwoth Mindset Research, entail how they see their capabilities and this plays a fundamental role in their motivation, as well as achievement” Topic Sentences: (Supporting Paragraph 1) When scholars study in a structured program it becomes possible to develop their understanding, as well as enhance their intellectual capacities, and consequently they improve their performance Supporting Paragrpah 2), the four academic mindsets could increase sutdents’ academic perseverance and improve academic behaviors. It also leads to better performance as measured by higher grades. Supporting Paragrpah 3) The stereotypes are normally rooted in fixed mindsets, such students run a high risk of embracing stereotypes that would negatively impact their academic performance. Supporting Paragrpah 4) . It important to note that studies have demonstrated that teachers are instrumental in nurturing the mindset of their students. A teacher’s mindset concerning a student’s intelligence and capability can shape the student’s beliefs regarding his or her own intelligence, which affects student’s performance. Supporting Paragrpah 5) . It is evident that growth mindset learners are less tend to quit their tasks, and that they hold the conviction that additional effort leads to superior grades (Dweck). Supporting Paragrpah 6) A positive relation was established between having growth mindsets, and more efficient self-regulatory systems, and goal attainment Supporting Paragrpah 7) Growth mindset leads students to find meaningful strategies of learning. Also, they could recover rapidly from a bad grade. Source materials
When I watched the Dweck's video during English class, I realized that what kind of student I am and even my personality. The context from the video was clear that it is possible to change our level of smartness by hard working. It is not only intellegence, but it is also concerend with passion of learning. According to a number of studies, it is true that students who hold growth mindset less give up on their tasks than students with fixed mindset. Students should not be exposed to teachers’ opinion on social and political issues in class.11/26/2016 Some people think that teachers do not convey their social and political opinions to their students, while others do not. If I were asked to choose one, I would say that it is possible that students can be exposed by teachers’ viewpoints. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, students can have an opportunity to have their own social and political values. To be specific, since teachers have studied academically for a long time, they have in-depth knowledge and their values. If this knowledge is well conveyed to students, students can foster their views which are not contained in text books. For example, Seoul National University found a huge difference between two groups of high school students. One group consisted with those who studied with teachers who had transmitted their perspectives, and the other group was made of those who had not. The researchers found that the former was more likely to have their own beliefs about social issues such as gender issues. In addition, the former tended to show a higher attendance rate in college, because they had a good grade on the essay test. This implies that teachers’ social and political perspectives positively can affect students. Secondly, students have an ability to filter pertinent views from teachers. Students are getting a lot of information through internet news and internet communities. If teachers convey a skewed opinion to students, they can choose suitable views and shape their own views. For instance, my sister can have an ability to form his value in terms of North Korea’s human right issue facilitating and comparing teachers’ opinion and internet news. Moreover, she wrote her essay in her high school newspaper containing her opinion and got a good evaluation from her friends and teachers. This implies that most of students can shape their opinions not wavering teachers’ opinions. To sum up, teachers’ political and social opinions play a significant role in shaping the students’ own views and students can filter teachers’ opinions well. In this regard, I hold that students can be exposed to teachers’ opinion on social and political issues in class. Since I was in middle school, I was a fan of hip hop music. Some people might dislike hip hop because they think it is noisy and violent. They also think rappers curse a lot in their songs. I think a number of people have stereotypes for this genre. However, I believe hip hop is the most honest music genre. I like the energy of hip hop because rappers usually talk about their dreams and they make an effort to achieve their goals. Not only lyrics, but also the rhythm of hip hop is fascinating. Rappers who rap with a strong background beat makes the listeners excited.
Which factors make someone a good rapper? First of all, rappers should write their own lyrics. Rap lyrics should contain rhyme. Rappers use rhyme to make rhythm. They make sentences which sound similar with different consonants. Rappers can talk about their thoughts or experiences in their songs. Moreover, it has to be authentic. Rapping and talking in general are different because Rapping is like singing as it has to have rhythm. To create rhythm, rappers should have unique rap voices. As it stands, a unique voice can help listeners identify who the rapper is. Finally, rappers should have their own flow, which includes rhyme schemes and intonational techniques. The news media is a reliable source of unbaised information?
We can watch the news on our television every day, and we can learn lots of things from that. However, do you think that all information from the news is correct? Some people say "Yes", since people monitor different media. However, I disagree that the news media is a reliable source of unbiased information because the news can be deliberately distorted, and people might provide wrong information to newspaper company. First of all, the news can be deliberately distorted. Some people might bribe or give a pressure on newspaper company to report news that are not real for their benefits. For example, while south Korea had military regime, the government dominated the media, so there were only false news or the news didn't come out. As a result, people could not get any true information to think about their country. Also, some people bribe the news company to report the news that they want to report or not to report the news that will cause detrimental effects on them. These days, there are still some news that are deliberately distorted, and this violates the citizen's right to know many things about our country's politics. Secondly, citizens might give false information to newspaper company. Sometimes, citizens provide an information to report for newspaper company. While people provide them information, those information could be wrong too. Although the company will check whether that tip-off is true or not, the company can think that data given by other people is correct. This can cause false news being broadcasted all over the country. Then, citizens will get a wrong information which can confuse them while they are thinking about their country. This can cause a bad choice if they are voting for the new president, or congress person. These are the reasons why I disagree that the new media is dependable source of information without prejudice. I hope the number of news media which deliberately distorts or give false information because of mistakes goes down. As a result, I strongly believe that the news media is not a reliable source of unbiased information. My major is a health science, but I am interested in business too. I just try write my opinion about the economy in our society.
In the world, the income between rich people and poor people's gap is getting bigger and bigger. This is a free market, anybody has an opportunity to create wealth, but why in this society has poor people and rich people? Why government can't be fair and give everybody same amount of income so everybody is satisfy and no more crime will happen, because everybody have same amount money to spend. The reason is market economy. On market economy, in this society anybody have rights to work harder than other people for living a better live. That is why we have rich people and poor people. Now many people rise issue about distributive justice. which is the gap is getting bigger between rich people and poor people. Rich people has better education and more opportunity from their family or other rich people to create wealth. Poor people may also have good education, but less chance to create wealth from his family or other friend support. And I believe this is true. However, I also believe if poor people work hard enough they could become rich, but not tomorrow maybe in the next 20-30 years. Long time ago, In Korea, we had planned economy, but it didn't work out very well in the long run. All resources are distributed and controlled by government and cause inefficient distribute resource and waste resource. Demand is determined by market. Also under planned economy too many unfair practices such as insider trading collusion and monopolies. Those unfair practices slow down the pace and people are not motivate for work harder. Since everybody is getting same amount resource so there is no reason for people to worker harder. Under planned economy system people can't pursuit what kind of the job they wants to do. Therefore around 1980 the whole economic system collapse. Now we get back to our society, under Market economy the whole market supply and demand control by invisible hand. Under control by this hand, the supply, demand and price will naturally balanced. This hand is people's need and resource competition. Also under free Market economy people encourage to work harder for them and their family to live better live. So I believe income grow inequality is the fairest distribution. income grow inequality is the reflect of the free Market economy. In conclusion, income growing inequality is the reflect of fairness. "invisible hand" which is free Market economy will show the supply and demand on market in a equilibrium price. Distribution will be naturally balanced. Our success is measuring how bad we wants to be success, so we are under this free Market economy and give everybody a chance to win. This society give everybody a fairest chance to create a live we wants to live, the rest part is that we are going to work hard enough to become successful or become one of those people who stay at home doing nothing, but complain about unfair this society is? Universities should spend as much money on sports as they do on libraries.
Along with the constant progress of the global economic condition as well as the prosperity seen on the current living standard, people put more attention on their health. Regarding this issue, while some people believe that it should be spent fund on academic and sport field equally on campus, other think otherwise. From my own point of view, I am in agreement with the former stand. The arguments are listed below. The first reason for my opinion that can be seen by every person is that sports activities can improve students’ health. Most of universities students’ studying is conducted in front desk and they spend a lot of hours using their computer. For example, one of my friends, whose major was computer program, had spent most his time on his computer desk. He gained 10 kilo-grams weight because of his sedentary lifestyle and he participated swimming club on campus. Every 2 times a week he went to gym, and finally he could treat obesity by university’s sports program. Another reason that should be taken into consideration is that sports activities can create some sort of relationship among students. This is to say, it can make a new friendship and sprite of cooperation. For instance, I was a soccer player when I was a middle school student. When I was hang out with others at school club, I could make many friends there. Also I could learn about the team work while I was playing the game. As a final point, according to a recent research conducted in the Seoul city by well-known firm in Korea, 85% of university students who study combined with physical activities got higher grades than other students who just study without any activities outdoors. This illustrates the point that proper exercise can increase students’ study abilities. Looking at all the statements above, there are many reasons to be considered, but at the end of the day, I would rather it is worth as much spending fund for sports activities as university academics. |
